Thinking Outside the Box Activity Collection
Thinking Outside the Box Activity Collection is a downloadable, password protected PDF. Together with you, Project Learning Tree (PLT) and International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) can inspire the next generation of environmental leaders by introducing young people to forests and nature through the power of environmental education.
Hands-on Learning
The six activities invite students to investigate forests and nature through the power of environmental education by introducing learners to sustainable packaging.
- We All Need Trees (Grades K-2): Students ages 5 through 8 examine various products and determine which ones are made from trees and classify products that come from trees.
- My Green Future (Grades 3-5): Students ages 8 through 11 explore multiple jobs that are directly related to forest resources and how various professionals work together to care for forests.
- Peek at Packaging (Grades 3-5): In this activity, students ages 8 through 11 examine the pros and cons of different packaging and design an “ideal” product package.
- Renewable or Not? (Grades 6-8): Students ages 11 through 14 model what happens to renewable and non-renewable resources over time and discover why sustainable use of natural resources is critical.
- What’s in a Label? (Grades 6-8): In this activity, ages 11 through 14 explore the environmental, social, and economic criteria of forest certification and consider possible benefits and limitations for both forests and people. Students will learn about the steps involved in making certified forest products and the importance of certifying each step of the process.
- Seeking Sustainability (Grades 9-12): Ages 14 through 19 explore the concepts of sustainability by examining the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and identifying connections with forests and forest products, including corrugated packaging.
